just another art week.
very bleh.
Disclaimer: Before I start this post, this is not about the art in general. I love Art Week because it exposes me to Latin American art which is not something I am deeply familiar with so I enjoy discovering appreciating the art.
I wish the artists were the main focus of this week full of events like a Fashion Week.
As I woke up on Monday morning for a 7 am meeting, I stretched and gave thanks because Mexico City Art Week was finally over.
This is my second year on the books and could be my last.
And here’s my reasons why.
Referring back to my disclaimer, this isn’t about art - it’s about the art scene.
I think this year had very beautiful and powerful pieces - they reflected what’s currently going on in the global landscape.
I took the same approach as last year and tried to visit exhibits during the day to really be able to analyze a piece without worrying about being in someone’s selfie.
I have so much respect for artists. The ability to tell a story through different mediums - to me, it’s the highest form of creativity.
Because of a medical obstacle, I took it easier than last year but still found myself overwhelmed with the amount of events and activations scheduled throughout the week.
I was pleased with the amount of exhibits I was able to see knowing that many of them would still be available the following week.
It just amazes me the lengths that people will go to be see or noticed or to infiltrate certain circles.
At one point of my life, I tried the blogging scene which was pre-influencer and I know I could have been successful with it. I have a life that is interesting enough but a part of me felt very vapid in a way - I hate the small talk, the fake interest, and the constant events that come with that world.
And I think that’s why scenes like Art Week always rub me the wrong way.
I love a good photo just as much as the next person but can you take time to appreciate someone’s life’s work? Please. Not just make it a part of your social performance.
And I love a good party but there’s only so much free mezcal one person can drink!
Since we are peeling back the layers of society as a whole, I think I’m looking at these spaces in a deeply humorous way.
I keep seeing being offline as the trend of the season and I think that’s one trend I can support because social media has shifted the way we all live our lives.
The way we socialize, the way we attend events and milestones, the way we show up for each other.
Everything has turned into a performance.
And I truly don’t feel like participating in it.
